The Role of the Dietetic Department
Welcome to the Dietetic Department, Adult Learning Disability Service.
We are based at Kirklands hospital, Bothwell and our service covers the whole of Lanarkshire, via the community Learning Disability Teams in North & South Lanarkshire.
The people we see are 16 years old and over. We tend not to become involved in a person’s care until they are entering the transition phase between Paediatric and Adult services.
We work in a wide range of environments including family homes, day centres and residential care settings.
Referrals to our department can be made for a variety of reasons. Please refer to our referral criteria.
The majority of our referrals are to address complex physical health needs, where the person has an associated learning disability which places limitations on their level of functioning, resulting in their inability to access generic service effectively.
Local Services
We hold a weight review clinic at Kirklands Hospital on the last Friday of every month.
The clinic takes place from 10.30am-12noon and is led by our Dietetic assistant.
Clients attending this clinic have been assessed and monitored by the registered dietitian and are now at a stage where their care can be continued by the dietetic assistant, with continuing liaison with the registered dietitian.
Clients attending the clinic are allocated with appointment times.
Information for Patients
For general healthy eating advice we would recommend you visit the Food Standards Agency eatwell website.
The department uses the “Eatwell plate” for general healthy eating advice and the web site also has many tips, ideas and recipes to help you improve your daily diet.
For individual referred clients the dietetic advice is tailored to their individual needs and circumstances.
