Plans to develop a £27 million state of the art health centre, offices and retail properties in Airdrie’s town centre were given the go-ahead by members of North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department.

Permission was granted to develop the vacant Somerfield supermarket site and adjoining six-storey office block on Graham Street in the town centre.

Councillors agreed that the busy new health centre would contribute to the success of the town centre.

The ground floor will house four retail units, including a  pharmacy and social work offices, while the upper three floors will be used by nine different GP practices and a number of primary care services, serving almost 30,000 patients from across the town.

Ian Ross, Director of Strategic Implementation Performance & Planning for NHS Lanarkshire said: “This marks a significant step forward in the development of the new health centre which will provide access to a wider range of health services in a modern, purpose-built facility, for the people of Airdrie. This demonstrates the ongoing investment by NHS Lanarkshire in local health care services”.
